A Treasury yield is the annualized return implied by the price and cash flows of a U.S. Treasury security under stated conventions. The yield curve compares yields across maturities at a point in time. It is useful market information, but it is not a guaranteed forecast of policy rates, inflation, economic growth, or investment returns.
Know which rate you are reading
Treasury bills, notes, bonds, and inflation-protected securities have different cash-flow structures and quoting conventions. The U.S. Treasury publishes several series, including bill rates, nominal par yields, and real par yields. Compare like with like and record the source, date, observation time, maturity, and rate definition.
Treasury explains that its daily par yields are derived from indicative closing bid-side market quotations and an estimated yield curve. They are not necessarily the price or yield available for a particular transaction.
What shapes different maturities?
Shorter maturities tend to be closely connected to current monetary policy and expectations for near-term policy. Longer yields can reflect expected future short-term rates, expected inflation, growth expectations, and a term premium for holding longer-duration debt. Supply, demand, liquidity, and risk positioning can also matter.
This is why “the market expects one rate cut” is often too confident. Market prices compress multiple uncertain influences into one yield, and those prices change when new information arrives.
Curve shapes describe pricing, not destiny
An upward-sloping curve means longer-maturity yields are above shorter-maturity yields. A flat curve has relatively small differences, while an inverted curve has some shorter yields above longer yields. These shapes can be discussed as market conditions. They should not be treated as mechanical timers for a recession, rally, or central-bank decision.
Yield changes create price risk
For an existing fixed-rate bond, price and yield generally move in opposite directions. Longer-duration securities are normally more sensitive to a given change in yield than shorter-duration securities, though exact sensitivity depends on cash flows and other terms. Holding a Treasury to maturity addresses some price uncertainty but does not remove inflation, reinvestment, opportunity-cost, or liquidity considerations.

- Separate the change in level from the change in curve shape.
- Identify the new information associated with the move, while acknowledging competing explanations.
